Do It Yourself

Tuesday, April 06th, 2010 | Author: S. Waldo

I Have always believed that one of the best things for people to be is as self sufficient as possible. Even though I try really hard to live by this rule all of the time there are some things that you just can’t do by yourself. I can understand when the lock in a door will not work so you try to fix it by yourself. But when you need a new lock it is time to call a locksmith. Another example is if you try to install a new ceiling fan in your house you may be able to do it by yourself but if you have no experience or knowledge about doing something you should seriously get an electrician.

Some guys do it themselves because they are too proud to let some one else fix their house. That idea is just foolish because you could end up hurting yourself or you could just end up making the whole thing worse. You could break a whole in the ceiling, mess up the wires or break the fan. Now it’s all worse. The bottom line is; know when you can do it yourself and when you need to hire a professional.

Human Perseverance

Saturday, March 20th, 2010 | Author: S. Waldo

Humans can do some pretty amazing things. Throughout history there are plenty of examples of people who have endured some serious hardship doing what they believe is right or just trying to survive even though we can be fragile at times.

There are many stories of prisoners of war who have endured elaborate torture while staying quiet through the whole thing. These people were not only willing to die for something but they were also willing to suffer excruciating pain. Another example of the toughness of humans is the Long March of the Red Army in China. The army was at a loss and was forced to split up and retreat. One part of the army marched over 8,000 miles across China in little over a year, with the enemies at their heels. They eventually escaped, rejoined the rest of the army, and won the war.

So no matter how weak and insignificant people may seem, they can do some pretty amazing things. All it takes is some serious determination and persistence. If you keep at it there is nothing you cannot do. Remember this as you start your next do-it-yourself project.

Learning to Drive

Thursday, February 25th, 2010 | Author: S. Waldo

Learning to drive can be very stressful for the person learning, the teacher and the parents. This is especially true if you don’t feel like paying for a driver’s education class and your parent is the teacher. This means all parties have to stay calm. That is truer for the teacher because if the teacher is freaking out about every little thing then the driver will not be able to learn anything. Its chaos and totally unmanageable and places unneeded stress on everyone involved.

The teacher needs to be calm and supportive and start out very slow. That way the driver’s confidence can work its way up. Starting out small lets the driver learn how to control the vehicle and all the little things that go along with that. Breaking smoothly, turning, and turn signals are all things that should be learned before actually getting on the road. And even when you get there, you should go easy.

Take back roads and roads that aren’t used very often or by lots of people. Guide the driver through these places if he or she is unfamiliar with them. Once they get the hang of the road, then they can learn to navigate themselves. And eventually you can turn the driver loose to be on their own even though you may want to ground them until they are thirty!

Three Tips to Sell Your House

Monday, October 26th, 2009 | Author: S. Waldo

The first thing to do is look at the curb appeal of your home. While you may think having pink flamingos in your flowerbed are great, other people may pass on your home all together because they hate pink flamingos! These are the types of thing you have to think about. So clean up your yard and take out anything that may not look great to just about everyone. Next, check and make minor repairs that could improve the overall look to the home. Check and see if your painting needs to be refreshed at the same time.

The last thing you may need to do is hire someone to help you stage your home. When you are selling a house you need to present the inside as a neutral space so the potential buyers can envision their furniture and personal items in the home. Many stagers will either consult with you or do it for you and you will need to choose the best way to go for your situation. Working with a good local realtor also will help you.

So You Need to Make A Simple Repair

Monday, October 27th, 2008 | Author: S. Waldo

So you have a few simple repairs that you think you could make yourself if you just knew exactly what you needed to do.  Well there are a couple of things you can do to find information when you need to make those easy repairs.  You can start with the internet.  However, the Internet can be extremely confusing for some people and say it’s hard to tell if they are getting good valued information.  If you find multiple methods of repair, don’t panic.  They may all be valid.  So what can you do to decide which method is for you? Well here are a few other ideas.

Take a trip down to your local library.  You can potentially do all of your research on building new things as well as repairs from information sources you find at the local library.  It’s fast, fun, and most of all, free.  You can also visit the repair books for Black & Decker.  They have a lot of great books that you can buy and keep on hand to reference for many repairs.

When to Move a Greenhouse

Wednesday, October 01st, 2008 | Author: S. Waldo

Most people never think to move their greenhouse.  However, there are times it really does make since to pull up the tie-down kits and move that home greenhouse.  Since you always want your greenhouse to face either east or west, you will need to at least turn it if it is facing north or south.  The east/west position simply gets more sunlight.

Another factor to look at is the types of plants you are growing. If you are into foliage and greenery you don’t want to be sitting out in the open taking on full sun during the day.  You will need to be under some protection of shade for at least a portion of the day.  On the flipside, if you are growing fruits and vegetables, you will want to be out in full sun all day.  Either way, having a greenhouse that is movable can be a great bonus to gardening year-round.

Seven Questions to Ask Yourself BEFORE You Build a Shed

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 | Author: D. Jakes

Every do-it-yourselfer knows that there are some things you have to do before you ever start a project.  As much as you know that to be true, let’s face it, there are times we just dive in.  However, if you want to build a shed, that is not the type of project that you can always dive in and get away with the results.  With that said, here are seven questions that will need to be answered before building a storage building or shed.

  • Find out from your local building or planning department if you need a permit?
  • What is your purpose for the new storage shed?
  • How big should it be? Think in terms of how big it should be, not how big it could be.
  • Where should I place my storage unit?
  • What type of foundation is best for the location and use of the new shed?
  • What style and materials should I use to build it?
  • How much will it cost or how much can I afford to spend?

Once you have the answers nailed down, then dive in and have a great time building your new storage building.
