Do It Yourself Projects
There are several types of do-it-yourself projects that anyone who is interested in doing things in and around their house and yard can easily do. You don’t have to have a small army of saws, planers, lathes and other equipment to do some great intercut projects. Of course, if you have all of the above, go cut down a tree and get started. This article is for the rest of us.
The first thing to do is decide what type of project you aspire to accomplish. Is it shelving in the closets or garage; putting up a greenhouse to grow your own food year-round or; re-carpeting the den? All of these things can be accomplished several different ways. Let’s take the shelving first.
You can purchase some great shelving and storage kits that range from garden sheds down to plastic racks. All of these kits are pretty easy to put together and don’t take much more than a hammer, drill, screwdriver and some patience. Make sure when you order a kit you get great directions and materials lists. If you order plans for sheds or shelving units make sure they also come with a detailed cut list as this can save you money. If you do order plans, you will need a saw as well.
If what you want to do is a build a garden greenhouse, there are a lot of very nice kits for you to choose from as well as some great plans for those who want to build it from scratch. This also goes for garden arbors, pergolas and gazebos as well. Most of these types of outdoor structures come complete with pre-drilled holes and, if made of wood, sanded and ready to be painted or treated. Many home greenhouses are made from aluminum or plastic and are portable and very easy to move. There are some that require a pre-laid foundation and others that only require a tie-down kit when finished. Again make sure whatever you buy comes with great detailed instructions and materials list.
To re-carpet your den you will totally use a different approach; your local library. Go do some research in the how-to section about measuring, buying and laying carpet before you do anything else. You will need some knee pads and a good caret knife and will want to pay attention to cleaning the surface, taking the baseboards off and prepping the area. If you measure right, buy right and lay it right you will have a great new look to your den.
All these projects and more are not only doable but pretty easy to do. They can be done with a little help or you can get the entire family involved to get it done. The key is to get started.
