Holiday Season is a Great Time to Organized

Thursday, October 30th, 2008 | Author: D. Jakes

The holiday season is not only the time for parties and entertainment it is a great time to get organized.  After all, you have to move those decorations in and out of your storage units anyway, whether that be a shed, a basement or just closets throughout your home.  Anytime you are forced to go and get anything out of your storage area and it takes you more than a few minutes to find it and remove it, you have an organization issue.

There are plenty of shelves, bins and organizational systems that you can buy but the main question is; do you have space to store those items or are you just stuffing more and more into less and less available space?  Before you invest in the organizational systems, you may want to invest in getting some additional space either through off property solutions like a secured storage space or an on site solution with a utility shed of the appropriate size.  The bottom line is do it now while you’re having to go through your holiday decorations and save yourself time later.

The Multiple Use of Carports

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008 | Author: S. Waldo

You see them everywhere; carports.  However, you may not even recognize some of the carports out there because they have been expanded to be oh, so much more.

Let’s start with the obvious.  Carports were developed to be a simple covering that was both inexpensive and strong to provide adequate coverage for your one or two car families that don’t have access to a garage.  The older models looked like silver metal building tops on skinny poles.  Newer models come in an array of different colors and are lighter and stronger than the older models.

Becoming lighter and stronger has expanded the use of carports into several additional areas.  The first is farming where you now can purchase a large version of the carport to house tractors and combines and any other large or small piece of equipment that needs protected from the elements.  This protection is exactly what is needed for some of the pumping stations that are located in excessively hot areas.  Carports are now being used to cover sensitive equipment in many different industries with a good deal of success.  It is both an effective and inexpensive solution.

A Good Time To Do An Energy Audit

Friday, October 24th, 2008 | Author: D. Jakes

There are many local and regional electric companies that are conducting energy audits through their websites and through the mail.  It would be a great idea to either check online with your electric company and see if they are participating in these audits for their customers or suggest that they do.

These types of audits are important so you can learn what you need to do in your home to help with energy prices to cut down on your bill as well as to help the environment.  You will never have all the knowledge but it helps to gather as much as you can.

The Beauty of Vinyl Garages

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008 | Author: S. Waldo

One of the best values out in the market today is vinyl or plastic garages.  When you compare these types of garages to brick and mortar garages, you will notice there are many sizes available at good competitive prices.  Adding to this the fact that a vinyl garage is much easier to put together as well as faster to install, it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to see that vinyl garages are in the running as a good choice.

I will concede that a brick and mortar garage might be prettier, but let’s face it; they do the same things; keep your vehicles safe and protected and give you a place to store some of your valuables and other lawn and garden items.  So, if money is an issue and you need a garage, look at the vinyl garages that are available online and compare them.  You will find them to be an option.

Renovation For Older Homes

Sunday, October 19th, 2008 | Author: D. Jakes

If you have a renovation project that is taking place in an older home, try looking through some of the videos and text for This Old House.  Chances are that someone else has had the challenge before and their experience can help you avoid any potential pitfalls that may be on the horizon.

As someone that has renovated several older homes the information that I received before I started tearing things apart was a great help.  Gathering information before doing anything can be invaluable when you are dealing with the unknown elements of older building methods.  You will find that the reasoning behind such methodology can be insightful even if old fashioned and short of today’s standards.

I always come away with an appreciation of how things were accomplished.  This Old House can be a very useful tool before, during and after a renovation on an older home.

Do It Yourself with Kits

Friday, October 17th, 2008 | Author: S. Waldo

Kits are a great way to get started in the do-it-yourself world.  You have to know just enough about what you want to accomplish but not so much as to have a contractor’s license.  Also you can purchase a kit that is within your comfort level.

Some of the things you can do with kits range from building toy models from boats to car’s to airplanes to projects that encompass erecting sheds, greenhouses, arbors and pergolas.  You will have to learn the basics in using certain tools to do these kits but they usually easy to master.

If you want to get involved with laying concrete or other masonry or other refined skilled labor projects, it may be worth your while to visit a local hardware store and see if they have some weekend classes that you can participate in to learn more about your project.

A Cigar and a Beer

Thursday, October 16th, 2008 | Author: D. Jakes

There is nothing like kicking back and smoking a cigar and having a beer with a good friend.  Women don’t get it but that’s okay.  We don’t get the shopping thing either.  It’s a great way to catch up on what’s happening when you’ve been out of touch.  It’s a way to bond with you buddies and find out what’s going on.

I say this because most men don’t take the time to do this anymore.  We are all so busy with work and kids just trying to bring it all together every week that we forget to take a little time out for us.

With this in mind, pick up the phone this week and take a couple of hours out for you and a good friend.  Smoke a cigar and drink a beer or a jigger of scotch and catch up on life, you’ll be glad you did.

However, we run into a space problem a lot of times and end up putting things away where ever we can make it work.

So this year think about the challenges of what your guy needs inside and out.  Does he need a storage unit for his tools and lawn and garden equipment?  Will a workshop be the ultimate gift in his eyes?  Try and look at what he has to do to come up with the perfect gift this year.  It may surprise you just how doable it is to deliver just what your guy wants.

Alternative to Having a Garage

Monday, October 13th, 2008 | Author: S. Waldo

For those of us who do not have a garage, we have to decide what is most important; the added storage a garage gives us; or protection for our vehicles, before we decide to either pay the expense of building a garage or settle on an alternative.  Another consideration is how much space we have on our lot to build from scratch, erect some kind of a kit or just do with what we have.

If protecting the car or truck is the ultimate goal, a simple carport is a great alternative way to accomplish that end result.  Carports are easy to install and can be purchased in many different sizes and colors so you can cover more than one vehicle or a boat, camper or RV.

If storage is what is most important to you, obtaining an outdoor storage unit would be a good alternative.  They come in various sizes and most have foundation kits that are very helpful.  You will need to check with your codes department in your county or town to make sure what you want to do is within their guidelines.
