Real Organic Raised Bed Kits

Thursday, January 21st, 2010 | Author: S. Waldo

Two years ago my husband and I thought we were doing the right thing when we put in a raised garden bed to grow organically grown herbs and vegetables.  We did so much research on the plants, the soil and the pesticides/herbicides we should stay away from as well as water runoff.  We thought we had done everything right including stopping using fertilizers on our lawn.  Then we found out that by using treated timber to build the beds we were introducing the toxic chemicals into the bed.  Last fall we replaced everything with real organic raised bed kits made of cedar.

Now that the beds have been replaced we are again planting and making sure we are doing everything we can to make sure we have good clean, natural food to eat. Though I know it’s not as important to everyone to go to the trouble we have, it is important to have good food to eat at your disposal.  Whether they are organic or not, I highly recommend the raised garden kits for the ease they bring when planting, watering and caring for your plants.  There is no better way to garden!

It’s Time to Think about Garden Shed

Sunday, January 10th, 2010 | Author: S. Waldo

One of the things we don’t consider when we think about storage is the convenience of having that storage available 24/7, 365 days a year and the only way you can have this is having a storage shed on your property. Most people have one shed and while that works really well, having a shed that is dedicated to you backyard work and activities can make your life incredibly easy especially if you also garden.

Having your tools and equipment at your fingertips and always in their place when you are looking for them makes life easy and that is always a good thing. Don’t you think it’s time to get serious about your backyard shed? Make your gardening more fum with good, organized storage!

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Friday, August 28th, 2009 | Author: S. Waldo

I just got finished eating an entire bowl of fresh raspberries from my yard. I walked out back, picked them, came in and washed them and ate them. Simple, clean and good! They are better than anything I get buy at a store and much better than frozen. So my question is this; since fresh is always better then store bought, frozen and canned can’t even compare, why are so many people against growing their own food?

I believe that many have never tasted food right out of the garden. The fact is that there are many people in this country that have no idea what fresh fruit or vegetables even taste like. They get fed fast foods and processed foods for so long that they don’t know anything else. I recently built a small garden at a local center for kids and I was amazed that only one out of fifty had ever had food out of a garden. By the end of the season they will be able to try tomatoes, squash, bell peppers, lettuce and an assortment of other herbs and vegetables, fresh – picked and then eaten! They not only will not hurt you but you get the most vitamins, minerals and fiber from fresh vegetables and fruits. Try it, you just might like it!

Where to Find those Hard to Find Seeds

Saturday, May 16th, 2009 | Author: S. Waldo

Just last month I looked all over the area I live in for a type of been seed, and when I say everywhere, I mean everywhere. Even the local co-op didn’t have what I was looking for! I was then on a mission to find the seeds I wanted to plant; not the seeds that the hardware and garden stores thought I should plant.  At that point I went out on the internet and found them on the Burpee.com website.

Next year I will be buying a lot more from Burpee for a couple of reasons; they have a great selection and I plan on having a small greenhouse to start seedlings from scratch so I will be ready to plant as soon as the ground and weather cooperate. By purchasing seeds and planting your own you not only save money since you aren’t buying plants but you actually can plant exactly what you want to plant from tomatoes to beans, corn, squash, etc. I am slowly figuring this growing your own food thing out and think in a couple more seasons I will be a pro!
